Backups and recovery

The homelab has used Proxmox Backup Server (PBS), including plans to move PBS onto a separate laptop with a dedicated 3 TB disk. Treat PBS placement as a migration plan, not a verified completed deployment.

Suggested policy​

  • Back up LXC/VM configurations and application state.
  • Use PBS for deduplicated scheduled backups where available.
  • Keep a separate offline or offsite copy of irreplaceable data.
  • Test restoring at least one service, not only creating backup jobs.
  • Schedule pruning and garbage collection according to capacity and retention needs.

Avoid storing the only backups on the same physical failure domain as production storage.
